Monk Parakeet was named after their recognizable two-coloured feathers which resemble a monk´s habit. They are light grey and green. There is so little difference between the male and the female that it is almost impossible to distinguish them by appearance. The female weighs 10% less and is 10% smaller. They grow to become 27 – 30 cm long.

They are the only parrots that do not nest inside tree trunks. They build large joint nests in trees or man-made structures. They nest is a made up of intertwined twigs and grass. Each couple has got a separate entrance. Their nest reaches the size of a car.
The female lays 4 – 6 eggs; baby parrots hatch after 26 days. They leave their nest after 45 days. Their parents feed them for another 3 weeks.
They need a lot of fruit and vegetables. They mostly eat different types of grain (millet, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds…). They also like cooked maize, peanuts, and walnuts. Young parrots also receive egg-based food, enriched grains, maize, calcium, and vitamins.
These parrots are tightly attached to their nests. If they finish building it, we can safely remove the protective net. These birds are going to explore the surrounding area, search for food; however, they are going to return at night. These are highly practical and adaptable animals, which are active and always in motion. This is the reason they quickly destroy every non-metal parts of the cage. They like to bathe. The colour of their feather can have different shades of white, blue or yellow colour. In the wild, loose populations of parrots can mostly be found in North America and Europe.
